Four Rock City Band appearances in May

I have gotten out of the habit of announcing all of our Rock City Band appearances here on the blog, in part because I’m now keeping a mailing list for those who are interested. May is a particularly busy month for us, with four appearances coming up, so I thought I’d make an exception and post again here. We’ll be appearing:

May 7 (this Sat): Princeton Station, in Chelmsford, MA (on Route 4, just east of Route 3)
May 13 & 14: The Haluwa Lounge, in Nashua, NH (in the Nashua Mall, exit 6 off Route 3)
May 28: Back at Princeton Station one more time

All shows start at 9 PM, and there’s no cover at either Princeton or the Haluwa. I expect to be playing bass all four nights.

Rock City Band March 2011 Appearances

Rock City Band is appearing for two nights, March 18 & 19th, at Princeton Station in Chelmsford, MA. We’re on from 9PM to 1AM both nights. We’ve got three more gigs in early April too.

Four Rock City Band gigs in the next 3 weeks

I’ll be playing bass for Rock City Band four times in the next few weeks:

Saturday, Feb. 5th, at Princeton Station in Chelmsford, MA. If you live in northern Boston suburbs like Arlington or Lexington, this is about 20 minutes up Route 3.
Friday and Saturday, Feb. 11th and 12th, in the lounge at the Haluwa Restaurant in the Nashua Mall. That’s at Exit 6 off Route 3 in Nashua, NH, a few miles north of the Mass. border
Friday Feb. 18th, we’ll be appearing in the student center at Bentley University.

Come on out and join us! The Princeton and Haluwa shows start at 9PM and go until about 1AM. I think at Bentley we play two sets, starting at 9:40 PM and ending at 12:30 AM. We play covers ranging from the 60′s (Blues Brothers, Sam & Dave, Beatles) to the present (Lady Gaga, P!nk, Black Eyed Peas, Kings of Leon). Joining the band

After several years as the backup, I’ve just joined Rock City Band as their full time bass player — first gig is this Friday, January 7th, at Princeton Station in Chelmsford, MA, 9 PM to 1 AM. We’ll also be welcoming back the terrific Brenda White as our lead vocalist. Schedules, song lists, and other information are always available on the band’s Web site. If you’re north of Boston, come on up and see us!

Guitar builder & picker Wayne Hendersion interviewed on NPR

NPR’s On Point recently broadcast an interview with guitar builder and world class picker Wayne Henderson. If you love guitar, do check it out. Among other things, Henderson plays a very nice version of Doc Watson’s Nothing to It. Indeed, Henderson has built instruments for Doc Watson and Eric Clapton, etc. Highly recommended.

Another Gig with Rock City this Saturday

I’ll be playing another gig with Rock City Band this Saturday, Oct. 9, at Mickee’s on the Water on Middlesex Turnpike in Billerica, MA (map). We’re playing from 9 to 12:30, and if you live near Bedford, Lexington, Arlington, etc., it’s only about 20 minutes away. Rock City plays covers of rock and pop favorites from the 60′s to the present, and Mickee’s has a nice dance floor. More information, song lists, etc. is available on the Rock City Band Web site. Bass gig: Robert Cedrone in Lexington on Sept. 25th

Robert Cedrone and I will be appearing again this Saturday at the Starbucks (map) that’s on the north side of Lexington, MA (not the one in the center of town!) Robert and I go on at about 7:20 PM and we’ll play until a bit after 8 PM, but there are also a couple of other groups on ahead of us, so come early. In fact, we may wind up going on a bit early anyway depending how things go.

Robert plays acoustic guitar and sings a mix of covers including Van Morrison, Al Green, Southside Johnny, Roy Orbison, etc., and some originals too. We’ll again be joined by Ron Chancey, who is a terrific guitar player. Robert and Ron have for years been in the legendary Boston-area blues band, the Urge, and these local gigs give them a chance to get out and do something a bit quieter.

This is indeed the same day as my Rockin’ for KPM gig with Rock City Band, but with luck I’ll make it down from Dracut to Lexington with a few minutes to spare. (Go figure: no gigs for 3 months, and then two the same day. I’ll be back with Rock City at Mickee’s in Billerica for a full length gig the evening of Saturday, October 9th too.)

Bass gig: Rockin’ for KPM on Sept. 25th

On Sept. 25th, I’ll be playing bass for Rock City Band at the Rockin’ for KPM benefit at Back to the Boathouse in Dracut, Mass. Rockin’ for KPM is held each year to celebrate and raise money for the surviving two of three triplets, Kyle, Patrick and Matthew Wilkins, all of whom were born with Becker’s Muscular Distrophy. There will be good food and good music, and it’s for a very good cause. We go on for one set at about 4:30 PM, but the other bands start at 1PM and there are good bands following us too. This will be my first Rockin’ for KPM, but I’m told that lots of great bands show up and everyone has a terrific time. There’s more info about the benefit here. Come on out and join us!

Also: it turns out I have another gig that evening backing up Robert Cedrone. I’ll put up a separate posting with info on that one.

Gig alert: Payson Park Music Festival this Wed. in Belmont, MA

My friends in Rock City Band will be appearing this Wed., weather permitting, at Payson Park in Belmont, MA for the Payson Park Music Festival. As far as I know, this is a local neighborhood summer music event, at a small park in Belmont. I’ll be coming by to do sound, and I’ll likely trade off with Don playing bass. Music starts at 6:45 PM and goes until dusk. With luck, I’ll have a chance around 8:30 PM to dedicate one to Dan Connolly too.

RAIN DELAY: the concert has been delayed one day, to July 15, 2010, also at 6:45 PM.

Gig alert: 2010 World Bass Tour Starts tonight

…and, for that matter, it ends tonight too. In fact, I’ll just be sitting in on bass for just a few songs with my good friend John Landau, who is making one of his regular appearances at the Caffe Concerto restaurant in Shepherd’s Bush, in London. If you’re one of the three people in London who won’t be home watching the World Cup, come on down and enjoy some good Italian food and a little music. By the way, John has a terrific new CD out called Journey through the Dark (the band is John Landau and the Giants — you can buy or download it from Amazon, among other places). John also runs the terrific Petworth Sounds recording studio in London. If you’re in London and looking to do an album, a demo, or even just to find good rehearsal space, check it out.

Audio Web applications

By way of Slashdot, it looks like the folks who are building the experimental audio support in Firefox are making really fine progress. You get to manipulate the raw audio data using Javascript, more or less in real time. They’ve even had some success with doing the FFT’s in Javascript (I didn’t expect that would be practical with this generation of CPUs and language interpreters). This is going to open up a lot of really interesting audio applications on the Web.

It’s only an hour, but if you feel like stopping by for some coffee and a little music, please do! Robert and I go on at about 7PM, but there are also a couple of other groups on ahead of us, so come early.

Three Gigs This Week

This weekend, Friday and Saturday April 2nd and 3rd, I will be playing bass with Rock City Band at two clubs north of Boston.

Friday night we will be at one of our regular favorites: Princeton Station in Chelmsford MA. Princeton has restaurant style seating as well as a bar, and it’s just about 20 minutes north of Boston suburbs like Burlington, Bedford, and Lexington. Saturday we will be returning to the Lasting Room in Haverhill Massachusetts. The Lasting Room is a nice, traditional bar, with a small area off to to the side for the band and for dancing. For more information and directions, see this announcement of our previous gig there. Both gigs start at 9PM, there’s no cover for either, and both clubs have food if you want it. Rock City was formed by my good friends Darryl and Colleen. They play really good (IMO) covers of recent hits, as well as a range of older rock and pop. I’m the regular substitute bass player for Rock City, and it will be fun to be playing with them for two nights in a row. There’s a song list up on the band Web Site.

Next Saturday, April 10th, will be a smaller, quieter gig with my good friend Robert Cedrone. We’ll be playing for an hour or so in the early evening at the Starbucks on Bedford Street, on the north side of Lexington MA (map). I will post more details here when I have the exact time (probably 7PM) and other information.

(And yes, if you were quick enough to catch the first version of this blog entry, I had the Princeton/Lasting Room dates backwards; it’s really Princeton on Friday.)

Gig alert: Rock City Band — this Saturday in Haverhill

This Saturday, Feb. 20th, I’ll be filling in on bass for my friends in Rock City Band. We’ll be at The Lasting Room in Haverhill, MA from 9PM to 1AM. The Lasting Room has a nice, traditional wooden bar, and an alcove around the side with a small dance floor. Rock City plays really good covers of pop music ranging from the occasional 60′s oldie, right up to present day hits. Typical sets might include Van Halen, John Mellencamp, James Brown, P!nk, The Pretenders, Melissa Ethridge, Michael Jackson, Sam & Dave or Carrie Underwood. This weekend we’ll likely have everything from Joss Stone to Zeppelin.

Rock City hasn’t played the Lasting Room in quite awhile, and I haven’t played an RC gig in about a year. So, we’re hoping to get a big crowd. If you’re anywhere near Haverhill this weekend, stop in (no cover).
